Chris – Advocate & Mentor

Chris began volunteering as a Big Brother while attending Hope College, where his passion for helping others took root. He went on to earn a master’s degree in social work, building a career focused on supporting individuals with disabilities.

Over the years, Chris has taught sociology at the community college level and led courses in a prison education program. He also spent many years at Threshold, working with individuals living with a wide range of disabilities and medical conditions.

Today, Chris lives with physical disabilities, including paralysis on his left side and low vision in his left eye. His lived experience gives him a powerful connection to the FWA community. Chris understands the challenges—and the victories—that come with navigating life with a disability. He brings deep empathy, insight, and a commitment to fostering connection and community.
