The Amon Carter Museum was established through the generosity of Amon G. Carter Sr. (1879-1955) to house his collection of paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell; to collect, preserve, and exhibit the finest examples of American art; and to serve an educational role through exhibitions, publications, and programs devoted to the study of American art. The Carter houses one of the nation's preeminent collections of American art, from works by the early nineteenth-century artist-explorers through those of the mid-twentieth-century modernists and up to the work of contemporary photographers. The museum also holds one of the most comprehensive collections of work by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell.

As a not-for-profit university space, we can present a comprehensive representation of contemporary art without having to base curatorial decisions on issues of censorship or marketability. We offer free tours of exhibitions by appointment as well as free lectures, receptions and gallery talks that are open to the public. Community and school groups have used the space for meetings, mini-exhibitions and receptions, which we are happy to accommodate, based on availability. The Upstairs Gallery began in 1967 when Eleanor Grace Martin and her artist friends started a co-op gallery in an upstairs space in downtown Arlington. When the city bought the block where the gallery rented space to build the public library, Mrs. Martin moved the gallery to a historic house on Abram Street, where it continues to promote and sell works by artists living in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. The only commercial fine art gallery in Arlington, it has found an audience for paintings in a range of styles from current-traditional to challenging contemporary. It has a strong collection of contemporary ceramics. It often takes a chance on emerging young artists, but it also has on hand a sampling of works by some of the important Texas artist it represented during the seventies and eighties The Gallery offers art classes and workshops in the old house that stand behind it that draw artists from all over the world.
